Buying a puppy...

The Internet can be a great way to gather information on the variety of dog breeds and assist you to make and informed choice about a breed that best suits your home, family and lifestyle. However people looking to purchase a puppy over the Internet should be cautious.

It is best to try to buy locally from a registered breeder who is also affiliated with a recognized breed club. This will assist to distinguish between reputable dog breeders, and those that are not.

Reputable breeders are usually candid about their breeding program - in particular, common health problems and general issues regarding the breed. And if you purchase a puppy, you will have an experienced person willing to share their advice freely for the life of your dog.

A good quality dog is worth the time required to research and evaluate both the breed and the breeders you are considering. Take time out to visit a local dog show - this can be a great way to see a variety of breeds, meet a breeder or two, and examine the overall health, soundness and temperament of their dogs.

You will find that most reputable breeders will require that you reserve puppies in advance since their animals are in high demand.

Some choices to make…

Would you consider a mature dog?

From time to time, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog Club of South Australia have dogs that need to be re-housed for various reasons. These dogs usually come equipped with basic manners and are often housebroken. Most adult Pyreneans adjust easily to a new home, meaning owners can skip the puppy-adolescent life stages that can be somewhat challenging. These dogs usually have no initial purchase cost, which means your only financial obligation will be the ongoing cost to care for your Pyrenean.

Male of female?

This is a personal choice for puppy buyers. The male is often larger and has more coat, but apart from this minor detail both males and females have the same wonderful breed characteristics. The female Pyrenean, like most breeds, will come into season every 6 months unless de-sexed.

If your puppy is purchased as a companion and not for breeding, it is best to have it de-sexed at 6-8 months of age. A de-sexed animal will make a happier and healthier pet, and will probably live longer with less complications.
